MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS 6TH GRADE - 4TH QUARTER (MARCH-MAY 2008)

 LANGUAGE ARTS – Mrs. Zaszczurynski

The fourth quarter is full of fun and exciting things as we approach the end of the year.  Students, please remember that as the end of the year approaches the same quality of work is expected.  It seems that some of you have already found the “Spring Fever” and we need to stay away from that and continue our hard work.

In reading, for the fourth quarter we will begin with classics.  The sixth grade class has chosen Classic novels to read for their March book report.  Each student has a different book that they will read and, in turn, present a project the last week in March.  Please discuss the books with your children as they are reading them.  Also, one of our focus genres will be poetry as April is Poetry Month. The students will be reading and writing different types of poetry.

For writing, we will continue to work with our writing journals throughout the upcoming weeks.  The students are working on writing introductions and conclusions for their own writings. Another focus for writing will be poetry.  The students will be writing various types of poetry.

We are looking forward to a great ending to a great year.

MATH – Mrs. Anklin

Unit 6: Number Systems and Algebra Concepts -- In this unit, students use multiplication patterns to help them establish the rules for multiplying and dividing with positive and negative numbers. They also develop and use an algorithm for the division of fractions.  In the rest of the unit, your child will explore beginning algebra concepts. First, the class reviews how to determine whether a number sentence is true or false. This involves understanding what to do with numbers that are grouped within parentheses and knowing in what order to calculate if the groupings of numbers are not made explicit by parentheses.  Students then solve simple equations by trial and error to reinforce what it means to solve an equation—to replace a variable with a number that will make the number sentence true.

Unit 7: Probability and Discrete Mathematics -- There are some things we can be sure of: The sun will rise tomorrow, for example. We also know that there are degrees of uncertainty—some things are more likely to happen than others. There are occurrences that, although uncertain, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy.  While predictions are usually most reliable when they deal with general trends, it is possible and often helpful to predict the outcomes of specific situations. In Unit 7, your child will learn how to simulate a situation with random outcomes and how to determine the likelihood of various outcomes. Additionally, the class will analyze games of chance to determine whether or not they are fair—that is, whether or not all players have the same chance of winning.  We will be looking at two tools for analyzing probability situations—tree diagrams (familiar from single-elimination sports tournaments) and Venn diagrams (circle diagrams that show relationships between overlapping groups).

SCIENCE – Mrs. Anderson

The 6th grade has been working on a “Cell” unit. We are learning the different organelles inside the cell and will build, then dissect a cell made out of foods resembling cell organelles. We have learned about chemical compounds in cells and then diffusion, osmosis, and transport within the cell.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Mr. Esterline

We are studying the Late Middle Ages and the rise of Monarchies in Europe.  We will then look at Renaissance, Reformation and the Age of Discovery.  Expansion into America and political revolutions in Europe and America will be next on our journey through history.

RELIGION – Ms. Keagle

We will continue to study various world religions with guest speakers and presentations.  We will continue to build a repertoire of various skill-enhancing activities about the ripple effect of our actions.  Sixth graders will take part in a “hands on” experience.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Mrs. Anderson/Girls -- Mr. Esterline/Boys

Boys - We have been working on basketball skills and playing games.  We are anticipating going outside by mid to late April so we have started working on hitting and throwing skill as well as the rules for baseball (softball).  We will start a short unit on team handball which incorporates both basketball and throwing skills.

Girls - The girls have now begun a unit on hockey.  We are working on the skills that are used to play through a few lead up games.

MUSIC – Mrs. Collings

Students will be exploring several genres of music such as Classical, Jazz/Blues and Cajun music.  We will also learn one song to sing as a choir at the Academy Awards program and explore instruments of the Orchestra and Band.  If any of you play an instrument and would be willing to demonstrate for us, please let me know.

DISCIPLINE WITH PURPOSE – Mrs. Anderson

Sixth graders will be continuing on the DWP skills of sacrifice – service to others and what that looks like. We will tie it into Mt 6:1-6, 16-18.

HEALTH – Mrs. Anderson

We have been working on a unit dealing with “Caring for our Body”. We completed a section on skin and its structures. We are also covering hair, nails, teeth, eyes, ears, and health resources.
